Beethoven evening

MÁV Symphonic Orchestra

Many have tried to explain the secret behind Beethoven’s fame and what he and his music mean for contemporary audiences. In Bence Szabolcsi’s wording: “Beethoven is synonymous with the unparalleled portrayal of human emotions and thoughts through his artistic means, and he is brilliant at providing descriptions of human fate, struggle and triumph [...]”. Beethoven’s Egmont Overture represents independence and the victory of undefeatable longing for freedom over the worst and most brutal tyranny. Symphony No. 5 ‘Fate’ shows that man – just like humankind – is capable of defeating calamities caused by fate if he dares to fight against them. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, which was written in the period flanked by the above two heroic poems, causes us to bow to the greatness of this exceptional composer, as all careful and attentive listeners will instinctively feel that they are listening to a perfect musical piece. This composition -

due to the beauty of the musical thoughts expressed in it, the compositional proportions of this piece, the composer’s reverence of musical traditions and the balance caused by the brave surpassing of this musical heritage – provides listeners with the captivating feeling of one-time particularity and unrepeatability. As far as the performers of Beethoven’s music are concerned: violinist Ernő Kállai is an immensely talented musician with prospects of a very promising career, and the orchestra’s honorary visiting conductor Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, just like he has been doing for several decades, keeps conducting Beethoven’s masterpieces with the humility and passion so greatly appreciated by his audience.
