Creative architectural design: buildings, colleagues and students

Exhibition by Ferenc Salamin

In the scope of this exhibition, Ferenc Salamin’s lifework created so far is presented: in addition to showcasing photos of his completed buildings and their accompanying plans, the exhibition introduces architectural designs by Ferenc Salamin’s colleagues and students and portrays their joint work. Ferenc Salamin’s lifework forms one unified piece and his creative periods build on one another. The start of his career was defined by his master Hungarian architect Imre Makovecz’s uniqueness. In his interpretation, architectural design was much more than ‘simple’ design: it expressed the designer’s worldview, the power of the Hungarian community, the spirit and mentality of the region, and the prevalent way of thinking of the people populating the Carpathian Basin.

Later works by Ferenc Salamin reveal the importance of the preservation and handing down of local identities. The main intellectual motive behind his buildings is constituted, on the one hand, by the research of the architectural character of the Tokaj-Hegyalja Hill region, and, on the other hand, by its insightful, indirect and, so to say, artistic presentation. By now, Ferenc Salamin’s architecture has transformed into such a quiet, noble and dignified design tradition that is not only attentive of its genius loci but has also managed to preserve its playfulness and thereby its agility and freshness. What is more, Ferenc Salamin’s lifework is perfect for bridging the gap between “high architecture” and the architectural taste of the general public.
