Writers in Close-up

This program features the presentation of three new books written as part of the collection entitled ‘Writers in Close-up’

For three years now, the Hungarian Academy of Arts’ Section of Literature has been publishing its monograph series, which contain writings by highly recognised literary experts discussing the works of the most significant Hungarian contemporary writers and poets. In 2016, the following writings summatively describing the lifework and lifecourse of literary artists were published: books about József Tornai, about József Ratkó, who is currently mostly remembered exclusively for his poems, and about Anna Jókai, who is probably the most widely-read Hungarian prose writer. These volumes are presented in the scope of this afternoon program.  The authors of the books will engage in workshop discussions with the literary artists whose lifework they describe in their volumes, or if this is impossible – due to the death of the literary figure in question –, they will interview the closest friends or other people having maintained a close relationship with the person concerned. Jenő Alföldy will interview József Tornai, while Anna Jókai will be interviewed by member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts László Imre. Author of the book on József Ratkó’s lifework Zoltán Jánosi interviews former member of poets’ literary circle “Seven” István Ágh in the scope of an attempt to draw a literary portrait about the personality of József Ratkó. Recitation of poems and prose excerpts offer some insight into the works of the literary figures under scrutiny.

Entry is free, but signing up is required.
