Your Choice: Apocalypse or Global Sustainability

3rd International Carpet Exhibition, 2017.

By the choice of the topic ‘The Apocalypse’, carpet artists wish to reflect upon a very early stage of this art genre and wish to go back to the time when themes, represented on carpets in the form of really monumental series of medieval tapestry images, were enlarged by anonymous textile artists. In the Middle Ages, these images served the purpose of providing religious teaching just like today’s billboards function as advertisement surfaces. The title of the exhibition ‘3rd International Carpet Exhibition, 2017’ also reflects upon the significance of the Workshop of Gödöllő, which is considered to have functioned as the cradle of Hungarian carpet and tapestry art. The above-described method of carpet and tapestry making was cultivated by Hungarian textile artist Noémi Ferenczy and future Hungarian generations of similar artists following her footsteps. The artworks showcased at this exhibition focus on current themes not only through the techniques they employ but also through their notions of the images they present and, in addition, they seek increasingly provocative ways to call attention to the universal and global responsibility shared by both art and our contemporary civilisation for our world.
