Different periods and diverse responses ... Surprising as it may seem, relatively few people take advantage of the benefits afforded by the heritage and well-established knowledge possessed by their families.

The Cranach family of master painters or the Brueghels (senior and junior) obviously go against this trend. The 1914-born József Guti Sr. and Soma Guti J., a father and his son, are two truly original and characteristic figures of the modern and contemporary eras of Hungarian painting, who also defy such a trend. A part of the rich lifework by József Guti Sr. was unfortunately destroyed in his own studio, when it was hit by a bomb at the end of World War II, while other artworks by him are owned by art collectors in Western Europe and the USA. In addition, his son Soma also cherishes quite a few of his father’s works in his own art collection. If the two lifeworks are compared, it is evident that both can be divided into stages:  the father’s stages of lifework range from plain art to portraits as well as from playful drawings to constructivism, while the son’s stages of lifework encompass an arch from reinterpreted surrealism to object-forming and expressive objects, as well as to the refined use of precious metals, which latter feature characterises his most prolific period.

The exhibition by two Gutis, showcased in Vigadó Gallery in October, will be similar to a travel in time. We look back in time, glance at the present and conclude: “time passes but never fades”. Neither do the traditions cherished by a nation or a family of artists. And finally, we conclude anew: such (art)work is well worth continuing.
