The English-language libretto of the oratorio entitled Susanna has for a long time been attributed to Newburgh Hamilton
However, his authorship was questioned later on. Today, it seems more likely that the libretto was actually written by poet and playwright Moses Mendes. The story of Susanna is based on Chapter 13 of the Book of Daniel. Händel composed this work in the summer of 1748. Following his Judas Maccabaeus and Joshua, which are nationalistic in their tone, Susanna is again closer to the genre of the opera. Susanna premiered in Covent Garden on 10th February 1749. To our knowledge, it is the first time Susanna will be premiered in Hungary in its entirety. The reason why Susanna will be premiered on 23rd February 2017 is that this day celebrates the 333rd anniversary of Georg Friedrich Händel’s birth.
