Three violin concertos, three young and extremely gifted violinists under the leadership of András Keller, himself a master of the instrument. These facts alone would make this concert a true festival of the violin. The globally acknowledged Jenő Hubay’s Violin Concerto No. 3 (1907) and his master, József Joachim’s Hungarian style piece No. 2 (1861) are positioned either side of the only concerto for the instrument written by Sándor Veress in 1939, when the maestro – who spent half his life living in Switzerland as an emigre – was still resident in Hungary. Of the three young soloists, the audience of Concerto Budapest are most likely to know Miranda Liu best because she has been concertmaster of the orchestra since September 2016. Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux is also in her early twenties but her CV already boasts several wins at international competitions and important debuts. Spaniard Pablo Hernán Benedí (born: 1991) is around five years older and he, too, is a globe-trotting artist who has reaped significant plaudits in the field of chamber recital, because he plays violin (alongside Alina Ibragimova) in the Chiaroscuro Quartet, source of some of the most intriguing productions of our day.
