Beholding the Heavens

Textile artist Margit E. Szabó

Margit E. Szabó graduated from the woven materials, carpet-maker and gobelin programme at the Hungarian National School of Fine Arts, and right after completing her studies she got engaged in carpet design, which brought her several decades of success. By renewing long-established and widely-accepted artistic views of carpets, she created unique woven wool-based artworks through transcribing numerous motif systems established by diverse cultures. Due to changes in the past decades, her artistic interest turned to paper-based artworks. For her expert and meticulous way of artwork production, she uses pens, technical drawing pens as well as paint on paper and Jacquard paper techniques to produce her plain graphics, plastics, and cylinder graphics, which typically exhibit gold and bronze hues.

Her latest works signal continuity: continuity between heaven and earth, which is established by her paper plastics functioning as signs between these two worlds. In addition, her exhibition creates unity between textile and paper, as well as between weaving and drawing by way of arranging her earlier and newer artworks into a unique system of installations. By presenting a transformation of materials, this exhibition offers visitors an insight into the continuity of Margit E. Szabó’s artistic career and her efforts to artistically renew herself, which efforts are evidenced by, and are embodied in, her creations.
