Gates and Flags

Katalin Szávoszt's exhibition

I am a town dweller.

I was born in the Budapest-based Varázs Street, later I went to school from my home in Ráth György Street and have since lived at numerous places in Budapest ranging from Kodály Circus to Galántai Street.

I love the metropolitan town of Budapest. The buildings surround me as if they were natural formations...

I graduated from the Hungarian College of Applied Arts and later I taught at this institution for two decades. In fact, my ceramics workshop has been situated near Hegyalja Road since the beginning of my career.

I have been intrigued by the symbolism of gates for several years now. The act of going through gates – may the gate in question be Gate Vienna in Budapest’s Castle District or the gate of a Grand Boulevard based house in Budapest – is supposed to bring changes into one’s life both symbolically and in reality.

The colourful mass of ‘Flags’ represents the imprint of the cultural impacts that influence our lives and provide us with unique experiences.
