Redoute 185.

Sixteen Years of Hungarian History – Through the Eyes of Redoute

One of the finest achievements of Pest-based classicist style buildings called Redoute, which stood in place of Pesti Vigadó and functioned as a definitive landmark in the town of contemporary Pest, opened on 13th January 1833. The building, designed by outstanding Hungarian architect Mihály Pollack, became a much-cherished venue in the town of Pest for holding diverse cultural, public and social events. In addition, Redoute also functioned as a concert hall, where Johann Strausses (Jr. and Sr.), Joseph Lanner, Ferenc Erkel and Franz Liszt gave concerts. In 1840 the first Hungarian exhibition of contemporary fine art was staged in this building and in 1848 the first representative parliamentary session was also held here. Ultimately, during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 the building was completely destroyed when Buda Castle was being besieged.

Sixteen years is a short period in the life of a nation but it is enough to change a country’s history.

The exhibition entitled Redoute 185, which closely connects to Pesti Vigadó’s permanent exhibition entitled the Timeline of Pesti Vigadó, intends to review the historical richness associated with the former building.
