The Silence of the Muses – The Voice of the Muses 4/2

Music in the shadow of the First World War

Were the muses really silent during the war? American historian and diplomat George F. Kennan called the First World War the “great seminal catastrophe” of the 20th century. Did this period prove catastrophic in musical history?
At this two-day series of four concerts, the Classicus Ensemble and their artist friends perform works of chamber music to reveal what influence the First World War had on classical music.

The “Great War” that raged a hundred years ago, not only redrew Europe’s map with its bloody battles, but also pressed its mark on the public mind and cultural life. Like the majority of people, most artists were initially enthusiastic about the war to be waged – a sentiment that soon gave way to despair and grief.
