The Silence of the Muses – The Voice of the Muses 4/3

Music in the shadow of the First World War

At this two-day series of four concerts, the Classicus Ensemble and their artist friends perform works of chamber music to reveal what influence the First World War had on classical music.
The considerable boom in chamber music that this period experienced was also related to the war: due to the conscriptions, not a single orchestra in Paris was left complete, and composers like Debussy took a new interest in chamber music.
Zoltán Kodály’s chamber music pieces will be a special focus of the concert series. One of Kodály’s most prolific period (1909–1920), when he composed chamber music almost exclusively, partly coincided with the war. Posterity holds the output of this creative period to be the most successful in Kodály’s oeuvre.
