Exhibition by painter Attila Duncsák

EXTENDED OPENING TO 23rd JULY!

The title of my exhibition references the themes and colour schemes of my paintings: a game of colours and playing with colours. However, metaphorically this title also refers to human life including my fate in it.

I was born in the Ruthenian town of Uzhhorod (1940) and shortly afterwards history left another lasting mark on this region and consequently I became a citizen of the Soviet Union in 1945. I have been living in the Slovakia-based Kosice for almost 35 years, but on the stage of Europe – being a member of a small nation – I can only act as an extra in the big European play. But as soon as I start wearing my clown’s hat and start making a comedy, I can really speak the truth.

Through my paintings, this is what I would like to communicate to all those who are touched by the world of masks, fancy dresses, kings, clowns, angels, saint and evil spirits.”

World falling apart (2016)

“Actually, he was able to find his own single path after he had ‘migrated’ to Kosice: walking along this path he could feel it was truly the right way for him. He was captivated by the power of the symbols associated with theatres, music, literature and the circus, which gave him the potential to be able to speak the truth. His fantasy was captured by the immortality of post-war neo-realist Italian films, the town of Venice and Renaissance art. Is the world then a stage? Only one part of it. And this part is the one that derives self-confession and self-revelation from some kind of Harlequin-like sense of duty relying on the powers afforded by the fantastic jocundity of the brush.”
