Ervin Lukács Season Ticket Series, 4th performance
Four concerts in Pesti Vigadó
“We had very talented Hungarian people of music to learn from: Kodály, Farkas, Sugár, Kókai, Viski, Szervánszky and Somogyi. Just to mention the greatest names…”
Ervin Lukács
Renowned not only as an outstanding expert and exceptional interpreter of old music but also recognised as an accomplished conductor, György Vashegyi, for the sake of this concert, has selected musical compositions from among Hungarian musical pieces composed in the past 200 years.
After presenting the Overture of Ferenc Erkel’s opera entitled Hunyadi László, which premiered in 1844 and constitutes the masterpiece of the Hungarian opera literature of the second half of the 19th century, László Dubrovay’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra will be played. This latter piece allows for the soloist to present her virtuosity through the incorporation of numerous special elements of playing techniques in this piece. It is unlikely that a more skilled musician can be found to play these tunes than Ditta Rohmann, who is one of the most acclaimed and talented musicians of her generation. Her play unites openness, natural musicality and her genuine determination to address her audience. Transylvanian Rhapsody, composed by Boldizsár Csíky, who is turning 80 this year, premiered in 2012. “If one can intertwine with and embrace their own ‘musical mother tongue’, their culture of folk songs and the incredible richness these musical expressions offer, they will certainly be able to create composed music in any genre: in the background, these compositions will definitely exhibit a touch of folk songs and they will certainly sound like Hungarian music,” Transylvanian-born Boldizsár Csíky claims, who is following the artistic principles held by Bartók and Kodály also through this ars poetica of his. The importance of Háry János, premiered in 1926, lies primarily in the fact that through this composition Hungarian folk songs could be connected to the musical theatre dating back to a tradition of several centuries: the suite, composed on the basis of this musical comedy, is one of the most popular musical pieces very frequently played at concerts.
