BRAHMS: Piano Quintet in F Minor Op. 34

This concert evening features masterpieces by three renowned representatives of Romantic music. The musical composition entitled Impromtu in B-flat Major by Schubert (1797-1828) is the third part of the composer’s four impromptus, which were released in Diabelli’s edition in 1838 and were dedicated to Franz Liszt. Schumann himself regarded his series Op. 142 as a four-movement sonata, whose Andante theme must have been very dear to him as he used the same theme earlier not only in Rosamunde’s Incidental Music but also in the slow movement of his String Quartet in A minor. These days, this theme and its five variations often feature at piano concerts.

Schumann’s (1810-1856) piano cycle entitled Carnival is probably the composer’s most popular piece. This 20-scene musical piece was composed between 1834 and 1835, and the musical tableau presented in the composition features traditional figures of the Italian commedia dell’arte (e.g. Pierrot, Arlequin, Eusebius and Florestan) as well as the figures of Chopin and Paganini. All of the accompanying elements of dance balls are present in the piece: compliments, winks, walks, waltzes... As a remarkably talented composer, Schumann frames the carnival confusion by a graceful introductory movement and a ¾-time battle march against the Philistines.

After the interval, the concert will continue with Brahms’ (1833-1897) wonderful piano quintet composed in 1864, whose movements include: I. Allegro non troppo, II. Andante, un poco Adagio, III. Scherzo, Allegro, IV. Finale. Poco sostenuto – Allegro non troppo. Bashfulness and concurrent manliness, passion, sentimentality and grandiosity – all of these qualities shine through the works of the Hamburg-born composer, who actually created his musical compositions in Vienna. This time Endre Hegedűs’ performing partners will be the well-known Somogyi String Quartet’s great musicians.
