Four concerts in Pesti Vigadó

“We had very talented Hungarian people of music to learn from: Kodály, Farkas, Sugár, Kókai, Viski, Szervánszky and Somogyi. Just to mention the greatest names…”

Ervin Lukács

It is not very often that we can listen to concerts in Hungary by world-renowned trumpet player Gábor Boldoczki as he plays abroad during most of the year fulfilling invitations from foreign countries.

Winner of several awards for his records, he was the first trumpet player to get invited to the Salzburg Festival as a soloist. He is in fact one of those few musicians who is keen to play both classical and contemporary repertoires, and he also earned his reputation for playing at several world premieres including the first night of Penderecki’s Trumpet Concerto in 2015. The three-movement Trumpet Concerto, which exhibits a classical structure, was created by one of the doyens of Hungarian music composers Sándor Balassa in 2004. Actually, this is the first time that this composition will be played at a public concert. This musical piece will be preceded by Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem, which constitutes a further musical development composed by him on the basis of his piano piece entitled Heroic March in the Hungarian Style. Indeed, this latter piece was Franz Liszt’s answer to Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty’s ode praising Franz Liszt’s talent. Also related to the great Hungarian poet Mihály Vörösmarty, the second part of the concert features a suite, which was described by Hungarian music historian Antal Molnár in 1916 as follows: “Poet Vörösmarty does not belong to the group of Hungarian poets associated with the era characterised by the Hungarian Revolution of 1848: the poet does not cultivate folk elements in his literary style. His expression of Hungarianness surfaces as fine and non-obtrusive elements in his subtle and playful poetry. The same is true to Leó Weiner’s music: his Hungarianness is present but it is shrouded by a veil typical of fairy tale worlds. In his musical works, Hungarianness shines through some motifs but even this happens in such a natural way that is characteristic exclusively of the unintentional creative acts of a proficient writer skilled in stylistics.”
