Work of Art in Focus - November 2021

Similarly to the previous months, this month also features a work from among artworks showcased at Pesti Vigadó's current exhibitions. In Pesti Vigadó, the month of November is dedicated to painter István Görgényi's memorial exhibition entitled "To your homeland without fail…". On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, István Görgényi's exhibition also functions as a historical memorial exhibition and pays tribute to Hungary's historic events of 1956. The majority of István Görgényi's lifework is connected to one of the most outstanding events in Hungary's 20th century history. The painter's realistic portrayal and his visual images interwoven with symbols immediately captivate the beholder and help the audience experience the age and events of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

István Görgényi considered Gyula Rudnay his master: Görgényi's images present Gyula Rudnay's intellectual world, styles and redefined symbolism. In addition, painter Görgényi's artworks are infiltrated with thoughts about the eternal fight between good and evil, and through visual images they likewise present the power of human resistance and Hungarian destiny. At the time of their creation, István Görgényi's artworks assumed a stance in opposition to the official politics of his age. His works did not fit in with the artistic canon developed in line with official party political viewpoints and expectations. Besides, at that time his artworks also meant danger to the artist himself. Painter Görgényi was excluded from exhibiting in public and his artworks were stored in dark cellars. For this reason, it is difficult to assess how many people actually had the opportunity to see these paintings at that time of their creation.

For this reason, Pesti Vigadó selected an artwork that contributes to the understanding of the 1956 events to feature as its Work of Art in Focus in November. The title of the artwork is "Shooting Practice", and the work's title itself also provides food for thought even if one considers only the historical context in question. Nevertheless, in addition to its historical roots the artwork also offers an exciting artistic experience. When looking at the artwork, we will immediately recognise one of the most beloved motives of István Görgényi: the motives of the bird and birds. In the painting, the birds exhibiting Hungary's national colours are at peril: they become the targets of shooting practice and it is up to our imagination how we imagine the continuation of the action depicted by the painting. The symbol of the bird is one of the most exciting symbols of fine art: it symbolises freedom, the hope of which is clearly present in our lives. In one way or another, all of us seek freedom, and we likewise experience and suffer from the lack of it.

Those who have not yet seen the secret images showcased at this exhibition, which after their creation were repainted so that the new images covered the original paintings to be restored only as late as in 2006, will be able to view these special artworks at the memorial exhibition entitled "To your homeland without fail… – István Görgényi 1956" in Pesti Vigadó's ground floor exhibition hall until 28th November.
