Concert by Saint Ephraim Male Choir

Encounters between Christian melodies of the Byzantine rite and Hungarian choir pieces for male choirs

Hungary’s popular Saint Ephraim Male Choir was founded in 2002 by Franz Liszt Award and Artist of Merit Award winning Tamás Bubnó.

Initially, the Choir specialised in the stunningly diverse music of Byzantine rite Christianity, and achieved success both in Hungary and abroad through this special repertoire.

The Choir addressed the tradition of Hungarian male choirs already at the start of their career, when they delved into Ruthenian priest János Boksay’s male choir liturgy. From here, their career path directly headed to lesser-known or unknown but, at the same time, incredibly rich pieces for male choirs composed by Franz Liszt, and later they went further on to deal with Béla Bartók’s brilliant and ingenious pieces for male choirs. Apart from the musical traditions of Byzantine rite, the other core part of the Choir’s repertoire is constituted by great Hungarian authors’ lifework for male choirs.

The eight-member Choir regularly gives concerts both in Hungary and worldwide. In addition, the Choir has also launched their own initiative in the form of a series entitled “Orientale Lumen – The Light of the East”, which features world-famous soloists and bands. Members of the Choir are versatile chamber singers, who produce adaptations, musical revisions and their own compositions for Saint Ephraim Male Choir.
