“Music for Paris”
This year Erdődy Chamber Orchestra celebrates the 30th anniversary of its birth. Founded by violinist Zsolt Szefcsik, the Orchestra’s main goal is to broaden the available classical music repertoire by reintroducing and presenting long-forgotten works from older eras – especially compositions with Hungarian relevance – as well as contemporary musical pieces. In addition to numerous radio recordings, the Orchestra has so far demonstrated its talent through the release of 17 music albums, which have won several awards presented by renowned foreign music magazines.
The programme at this jubilee concert also features numerous special musical pieces. The motto of the programme is “Music for Paris”: the concert juxtaposes four such works from the first half of the 19th century that were premiered in Paris but none of these were written by French composers. Apart from the Italian Cherubini’s overture of his opera “Medea”, the only surviving symphony by the Basque composer Arriaga, who died at a very early age, and the Polish composer Chopin’s Grand Polonaise with orchestral accompaniment, the concert will feature English composer George Onslow’s excellent Symphony No. 1 in A Major, which premiers in Hungary at this event. The soloist of the evening is Balázs Fülei, and the conductor of the event will be a specialist of the period, South African-born Gérard Korsten, who is currently living in Switzerland.
