Heritage and Architecture: A Window to the Past, a Door to the Future
This year again, Pesti Vigadó opens its doors wide for the European Heritage Days!
On both days, the building can be visited individually, without guided tours, with a free Walking Ticket, which can be obtained on the day at our Ticket Office.
Pesti Vigadó is not only one of the most beautiful buildings in Budapest but also a defining venue of Hungarian cultural life for 190 years. Within its walls, Hungarian history comes alive: legendary concerts, unforgettable balls, and even the first representative national assembly all took place here.
The predecessor of the Vigadó was the Redoute, designed by Mihály Pollack and opened in 1833, which was destroyed during the 1848–49 War of Independence.
Based on the plans of Frigyes Feszl, the Vigadó reopened its doors only in 1865, hosting distinguished events. In 1867, the coronation banquet of Franz Joseph was held here, and it was also in the Vigadó that the unification of Pest, Buda, and Óbuda gave birth to Budapest. Its concert hall has welcomed Strauss, Liszt, Erkel, Wagner, Bartók, and Ernő Dohnányi, among many others.
In 2014, after ten years of renovation, Pesti Vigadó was reborn as the headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, becoming Europe’s first interdisciplinary art centre and an ideal venue for cultural, artistic, and public events and exhibitions.
Discover the fascinating history of Pesti Vigadó, the famous events and figures connected to the building! Join one of our architectural history tours (subject to available times/places), or explore the magnificent interiors on your own!
The tours will start at 10:30 and 11:45 on September 20, 2025, and at 14:30 on September 21, 2025. Free tickets can be reserved via https://vigado.jegy.hu.
Please note, that all guided walking tours are in Hungarian! If you would like to join a guided walking tour in english, you can find this autumn’s tours HERE.
As part of the European Heritage Days, in addition to the areas currently open to visitors, all our ongoing exhibitions – the Sic Transit... by PIKA (Árpád Nagy) exhibition, the Retrospective exhibition, and our permanent exhibition The Pesti Vigadó Timeline – can also be visited free of charge.
Please always check the Opening Hours menu for up-to-date information on visiting hours, as well as special floor and building closures before your visit to Pesti Vigadó.
