THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT SEBASTIAN

National Philharmonic Orchestra - Pászti Subscription, 3rd Concert

A concert that offers an excellent opportunity to broaden our musical horizon: in one evening, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem (1947) and Debussy's Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien (The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, 1911) will be performed. The latter was composed by Debussy for Gabriele D’Annunzio's five-act mystery play. The two works complement each other brilliantly, as while Duruflé's Requiem, drawing from Gregorian chant, is restrained in expression, Debussy’s work is emotionally intense, often approaching ecstatic moments. The National Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, along with outstanding soloists, will be conducted by Csaba Somos, with Anikó Für as the narrator in the Debussy work.
