János Arany’s Poetry - Words, Sets, Dramas

The troupe of the Oradea-based Szigligeti Theatre invites its audience to take a spiritual journey with them with the help of a performance prepared from János Arany’s poems. From the Transylvania-based Salonta to Budapest, more precisely to the root of some oak trees situated on Margaret Island – this could be a befitting description of the journey János Arany completed, given that this journey could be formulated merely with the help of place names.

Even if Hungarian literary historian Antal Szerb writes that from among the Hungarian poets János Arany is the only one whose journey could be formulated “in a mathematical manner on the basis of the former events of his life and the Hungarian setting [he lived in]”, when we read János Arany’s poems, we are certain that, just like any other poet, he was also a citizen of the one single shared universe and that his works constituted – and still constitute – an indispensable part of our global culture. This means that his journey is that of a global citizen: starting out from the warmth of the surrounding people, leading to the loneliness experienced on the peak of Mount Parnassus.
