The Silence of the Muses – The Voice of the Muses 4/1

Music in the shadow of the First World War

Inter arma silent Musae? Are the muses really silent in time of war? American historian and diplomat George F. Kennan called the First World War the “great seminal catastrophe” of the 20th century. Did this period prove catastrophic in musical history?

At this two-day series of four concerts, the Classicus Ensemble and their artist friends perform works of chamber music to reveal what influence the First World War had on classical music. Zoltán Kodály’s chamber music pieces will be a special focus of the concert series. One of Kodály’s most prolific period (1909–1920), when he composed chamber music almost exclusively, partly coincided with the war. Posterity holds the output of this creative period to be the most successful in Kodály’s oeuvre.
