New Age – Changing Times

The Popular Dances of the 1920s

The Company Canario Historical Dance Ensemble, founded more than a quarter-century ago and led by choreographer and dancer Ágota Aranyos, is the only dance ensemble in the country that brings to life nearly 600 years of dance culture in its repertoire. It revives the dances and customs of famous royal, princely, and noble courts, performing in castles, fortresses, gardens, or, as a contrast, in modern settings. The music of past eras is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Music, dance, and theater were part of everyday life in these eras. The calm, elegance, and beauty of these times provide a true escape from the rush of daily life.

The performances offer a glimpse into the world of the European Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic periods, as well as lesser-known treasures of Hungarian dance culture, its uniqueness, and the fashionable dances of the early 20th century. The ensemble has performed with numerous Hungarian and foreign early music ensembles and large orchestras, and in addition to their dance-theater performances, they regularly contribute to family, children's, and youth programs. Over the years, they have performed in countries including England, Italy, Austria, Slovakia, Germany, China, and the United States.

In this year's Open House program, they evoke the most popular dances of the era with "New Age – Changing Times," which highlights the first decade of the 20th century.

The dancers of Company Canario will take the audience through dances, from the somewhat more reserved Hesitation Waltz to the One Step, a Foxtrot, and of course, the most intimate and scandalous Argentine Tango, ending with the era's most famous dance, the Charleston, in the magical great hall of the Pest Vigadó. Of course, the afternoon wouldn't be complete without inviting the beloved audience to join in a little dancing, so they can travel back together with the dancers to the special world of dance evenings a century ago.

This event is part of the XII: Open House – Artistic Celebration.
