"With Heart and Soul" – Lajos Fazekas, ceramic artist, Master of Folk Art, and Corresponding Member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, presents his retrospective exhibition Lajos Fazekas: Ember Restorer (2002).

During the setup of the exhibition, the artist, Lajos Fazekas – whose family has been working with ceramics for three hundred years – shared the purpose of this unique ceramic piece. This vessel appears relatively simple from the outside, its shape resembling a large pot. Inside the vessel, there is a removable ceramic sieve. This type of ceramic vessel was used in past centuries to help keep people warm during cold weather, especially when ceramics were sold at weekend markets. The lower part of the vessel was filled with hot coals, and the perforated ceramic was placed on top. Then, large fur coats and blankets were draped over it, and the women selling ceramics would sit on top to stay warm throughout the day. Essentially, it served as a built-in seat warmer.

I skeptically asked the artist if this vessel could support the weight of the heavy blankets and a person, to which he responded laughing, "Of course! Every one of my pots can hold it! Even this small one!"

Then, he took a smaller jug and stood on top of it!

Naturally, visitors cannot try this at the exhibition, but if they wish to learn more about such interesting details, they are invited to the guided tour, which will be held on January 23 at 16:30. During the tour, Lajos Fazekas will share more unique insights like this one.

The exhibition is open every day from 10 AM to 7 PM in the exhibition hall on the 5th floor.
