The artwork of the month for July is Now by Austrian visual artist Johann Berger. The piece is featured in the exhibition The Glory of Beauty, which showcases works by artists from Lower Austria.
The sculpture is made from so-called "multiplex" beech wood—thin layers of wood laminated together and shaped into the desired form. The letters of the ancient Greek word for "now" are abstracted and can be discerned in the rotating wooden elements mounted on a steel frame. Additionally, the motion subtly traces the shape of the ∞ (infinity) symbol—visible only briefly, at specific moments—offering a glimpse into the work's conceptual core.
The undulating, almost organic form embodies the tension between "now" as the briefest, most immediate interval in our perception of time, and the manifest reality of experiencing time itself. The symbolic messages conveyed through the sculpture's motion express both the "now"—visible only in fleeting instants—and, simultaneously, a smooth, continuous flow enabled by the bearings, alluding to the paradoxical idea of "now" as an elusive, eternal infinity.
The exhibition is open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM, on the 5th floor exhibition space.
On view until August 24, 2025.
