Kaláka is Good! Exhibition and Series of Events
The bath and community-building kaláka movement of Székely Land began in 2001. The idea of restoring traditional folk baths in Székely Land emerged during a regional development project, initiated by locals, the Csíki Association of Hikers and Nature Conservation (CsTTE), and the Ars Topia Foundation from Hungary. As a working method, we chose kaláka — a traditional form of mutual aid and collective work in Székely villages.
The first kaláka was organized in Lázárfalva. News of the initiative spread quickly, and many joined the effort. Today, kaláka events are organized in multiple locations each year. The volunteer movement, which started in Hungary, has since reached Vojvodina and the Highlands, and similar initiatives have taken place in Hungary as well.
This year marks a special moment — the kaláka movement turns 25. We wish to celebrate this milestone in a way that honors the spirit of kaláka. To do so, we are creating a gathering space where past and present kaláka participants can meet through various events — lectures, concerts, folk dance houses, and children’s activities.
We are very much looking forward to this opportunity to meet!
