Ferenc Puha – "Notes from the Island 47"
The painting is part of Ferenc Puha's Notes from the Island series and is articulated in the artist's characteristic light yet intense gestural painterly language. From the dark, weighty base layers, vivid signals of orange, yellow, blue, and purple break through, forming a dynamic, almost calligraphic network of lines that evokes the spontaneity of abstract expressionism.
The layered surface bears the accumulated imprints of the act of painting itself: at times the paint appears translucent, at others dense and material, creating a strong inner rhythm and a continuous sense of motion. The composition is non-narrative; rather, it conveys sensations and inner states—tension, pulsation, and release—while the image's character is defined by a subtle balance between instinctive gestures and conscious construction.
In Ferenc Puha's own words: "A sense of being can be transformed into a sense of image—at least, I believe so." This thought serves as a key to interpreting the series as a whole: the works do not record concrete visual scenes, but function as painterly imprints of lived experiences, fleeting impressions, and inner stirrings, where the gesture of painting becomes a tool of thinking and perception.
The Artwork of the Month can be viewed in the 5th-floor exhibition space of the Pesti Vigadó as part of the Strata exhibition until February 22, 2026, daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
