“I Too Had a Life on Stage” – The Theatrical World of Mór Jókai
The life’s work of Mór Jókai was closely intertwined with the world of theatre. From the very beginning of his career, he aspired to achieve success on stage. He gained his first successes with historical tragedies that encouraged patriotism. By the end of the 19th century, his stage adaptations of novels and short stories were written for the general public. His occasional plays, created for theatre anniversaries and opening ceremonies, reflect his belief in the theatre’s power to shape national identity.
