Grand Staircase
One of the most renowned and beautiful spaces of the Pesti Vigadó is the Ceremonial Staircase. On its central wall hangs Mór Than’s painting Prince Árgyilus Arrives in Fairyland, inspired by a Hungarian folk legend.
The decoration was originally planned to consist of mosaics; however, the walls were ultimately adorned with frescoes by Károly Lotz and Mór Than. This made the Vigadó the first officially painted public building in Pest. The wall niches are embellished with Than’s allegorical female figures and putti.
