Reflections of the Soul

The Film and Photography Section of the Hungarian Academy of Arts presents Reflections of the Soul, an exhibition showcasing the fine art of animation artists, on view in the 6th-floor exhibition galleries of the Pesti Vigadó from 10 September to 29 October 2026.

Many of Hungary's most celebrated animation artists have also made outstanding contributions to the country's visual arts. This unique exhibition reveals the creative world of these versatile masters—both established and contemporary—as well as the younger generation of MMA scholarship recipients, through their paintings, graphic works and sculptures.

Animation artists breathe life into still lines and infuse inert materials with spirit, bringing them to life on canvas and on screen. Although this dimension appears to be within the viewer's reach, it remains elusive—a realm of magic and illusion. The artistic statements presented throughout the spaces of the Pesti Vigadó may seem static and motionless compared to the rapidly unfolding frames of animated films, creating the illusion of permanence and materiality. Yet these paintings, sculptures and other works existing in physical space are animated by the very same inner creative force that gives life to their makers' moving images—the spirit of the artist.

Like the living plants that surround us, their transformation unfolds so gradually in time and space that an untrained eye may mistake them for something fixed and unchanging. These works, however, embody moments of time stretched to extraordinary lengths. Measured against them, our own fleeting existence makes us—the viewers—the hesitant, animated characters in the Great Cinema of life. As with every authentic work of art, they deliver a simple yet profound message: Change your life. Through these works, the animation artists—who so effortlessly breathe soul into lifeless matter—hold up a mirror, inviting us to pause, to stop our restless movement, and to take a long, honest look at ourselves.
