Arrigo Boito (1842–1918) was one of the most distinguished representatives of the generation of Italian composers following Giuseppe Verdi. His best-known work is the opera Mefistofele, premiered in Milan in 1868, for which he also wrote the libretto himself, based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust.
Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945) had been composing operas from a very young age. The first major work in this series was Cavalleria Rusticana, premiered in 1890, which brought the composer enormous critical and public success and remains his most famous and frequently performed opera worldwide.
