Reich 90 conference and workshop
Steve Reich turns 90 this year. Globally celebrated at venues like Carnegie Hall and the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the composer of Hungarian ancestry, considered the "father of minimalist music", is commemorated by HAA RIATM through scientific and artistic events.
Following a musical introduction by jazz artist Gábor Varga, Professor Simha Arom, a renowned researcher of African musical structures, gives a keynote speech. It presents the phenomenon called "rhythmic ambiguity" from the perspective of European and global musicology as the foundation of Reich’s music. Afterwards, Olivier Tourny speaks on the rhythmic aspects of archaic Ethiopian Jewish liturgy.
Lightning talks by experts from related fields provide an interdisciplinary view on polyrhythmic thinking.
In the afternoon, the audience can explore phase-shifting techniques through interactive presentations. The next day, attendees can experience the sonic space experience of Reich's music in practice at the Pasarét Community House.
