The National Museum and Institute of Theatre History celebrated the 200th anniversary of Hungarian poet Imre Madách’s birth in the scope of two outstanding events in 2023. At the 10th Theatre Olympics, a creation entitled “Madách Tunnel”, designed by Jászai Mari Prize-winning stage designer János Mira, and the Hungarian installations of the Prague Quadrennial (PQ) reflected on poet Madách’s magnum opus entitled “The Tragedy of Man”.

In the scope of the installation entitled “MADÁCH 200” staged in the Hungarian National Theatre’s upstairs foyer overlooking the Danube, visitors were able to see a special compilation of recordings presenting adaptations produced between 1969 and 2020. The other foyer in the Hungarian National Theatre showcases the artwork “winterreise.box” by Botond Devich and Jakab Tarnóczi, which won an award at the most important and prestigious scenographic festival the Prague Quadrennial in 2023. This piece is complemented by Hungarian artists’ works presented in Prague in previous years. In addition to the installations, this exhibition presents a selection of maquettes, sceneries and costume designs by Hungarian exhibitors of previous Prague Quadrennales.
